Mt. Hood

Beautiful Mountain

I first visited Mt. Hood as a graduate student in Parks & Recreation Management at the University of Oregon. My goal was to climb Mt. Hood with fellow students from the University. The weather was perfect, and we succeeded! At that time, I had no inkling that Mt. Hood and Timberline Lodge would become such important parts of my life and inspiration for my watercolor painting.

At Timberline

Timberline Lodge, Oregon. What a special place! Built in 1937 by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), today the Lodge is a National Historic Landmark. Located at timberline on Mt. Hood’s south side, it is a national treasure. Through my watercolor paintings I have told some of the Lodge’s story. There is so much more story to tell, and I plan to do just that.

Above the Timberline

Almost from the beginning, St. Bernard dogs have been mascots for Timberline Lodge. These watercolor paintings depict two of the mascots: Bruno and Heidi. When you visit the Lodge, you will be greeted by the current St. Bernard mascot. The Tucker Sno-Cat is another enduring symbol of the Lodge.
Riding Shotgun
Prints available

This is one of a series of paintings I recently did of Heidi and Bruno, two St. Bernard dogs - mascots for nearby Timberline Lodge, a National Historic Landmark. I painted the series at the request of Lodge employees who said they needed art work of the current dogs. They had art of former mascots but not of the current St. Bernards. I was pleased to take the assignment and enjoyed painting the dogs when they were puppies. This is a winter’s night scene of a determined Bruno riding “shotgun” in a Timberline Snow Cat, with snow flying.

The Silcox Hut was built in the late 30’s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), about the same time as Timberline Lodge was built. It is located above the Lodge, at about 7,000 feet on Mt Hood’s south side. Today, this rustic mountain retreat can be reserved for over-night accommodations and private functions.

Night time

During a full moon, a tour on snowshoes or cross-country skis near Mt. Hood, Oregon is an adventure to remember! In this watercolor painting, can you find the black bear peering at you from the woods?

Mountain Life

In recent years, I have enjoyed setting up my easel to paint at various locations near my home studio in Welches, Oregon. These watercolor paintings represent the tranquility of mountain life in our rain forest at the base of Mt. Hood.
Snowbound
Prints Available

Snowbound is one of my favorite paintings. I created this art as part of a class project in my friend Beth Verheyden’s
weekly watercolor painting class. Our assignment was to present the different textures of the snow, trees and truck
in an artistic manner. I think this painting captures the stark frigid beauty of winter with a hint of warmth from the
old truck and the Christmas tree lights. The original painting is now part of the permanent art collection at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland.
