Travel

With my career in recreation management, I was fortunate to live, work and paint in Switzerland, Germany and Australia; and various parts of the US. Since retirement, Jean and I have traveled in the US and to Eastern Europe, Africa and Iceland. All of our travels have presented wonderful opportunities for me to paint the local scenes. Here are examples of some of my watercolor paintings, created while traveling.

Along the Vltava, CZ
15 x 22 inches, original watercolor, $800

The Vltava River meanders peacefully through the picturesque medieval town of Cesky Krumlov - a World Heritage  Site in the Czech Republic. This painting was done from a sketch I did on the river bank. The Church of St. Vitas is on the right and the tall building in the middle is the Gothic Hradek round tower. While I sketched, local workmen were repairing a wall behind me. They were very curious to see what I was doing, so I invited them over to view my sketch as it progressed. In this painting I tried to capture the magical Old World flavor of this historic area.

Icelandic inspiration. In 1000 AD, Icelanders voted to change from paganism to Christianity. In the early years, the Lutheran church was not established there. So, each local farmer built a church for their family and people in the surrounding area. Today you can see these churches a you travel through the remote countryside. Most of them look the same: painted white with red roofs. The churches are very picturesque, reassuring and welcoming. Here are two watercolor paintings from our Icelandic adventure.
Spirit of Iceland, 8 x 8, original watercolor, $70
Spirit of Iceland II, 20 x 16, original watercolor, $250

This little owl lives in Chobe National Park, Africa. “The Journey” is based on gothic arches and vaulted ceilings I saw in European cathedrals.
